Cold temps, winter and the eventual SNOW.

We will temps falling below the 20's we all know it's coming - SNOW! Below are a few tips for the upcoming season:

  1. If there is a chance that the precipitation will freeze, pre-salt. Place a small amount of salt down prior to the freeze so you will not get that indestructible layer of ice under anything that comes down.

  2. Remember when salting there are so many different types: pet safe, concrete safe, temperature range effectiveness, mixes and so much more. I encourage you to check before you buy. We have seen damage to concrete due to the wrong salt, lower effectiveness due to the wrong type, not enough or too much applied. It's not super technical but it does take some thought.

  3. Plowing/shoveling - the prior 2 topics make this easier. But if you have health issues or underlying conditions it is probably not a good idea to get into an extreme weather event and then physically exert yourself. Some jobs are just best left to the pros vs the emergency room or a Dr's visit.

  4. Have a plan - where do you have to go? Do you want to get to the mailbox? Family or friends available? I can speak from experience if you wait until snow has started and or finished before contacting a professional your likelihood of even getting a call back is low. They work very hard in the harshest environment for extra long hours and DO favour people who get ahead vs waiting until the last min. because sleep is necessary and exhaustion is real.

  5. In a tough spot sand is traction and kitty litter in a pinch. If you clear off the sidewalk you can place sand down for extra grip and it will mix with salt and provide an extra layer of safety.

Just some helpful tips for this season as cold, snowy, wet, mild, warm or whatever the Indiana weather decides to send our way.
